I hesitated to make any recommendations concerning their existing cabinets but I felt like that was part of my job. I took one of the old island doors back to the shop to see what we could do. We sanded the sharp corners, added a dark glaze and new catalyzed clear top coat. The results were dramatic! They were so pleased that we ended up doing the whole kitchen (we don’t usually do any jobsite finish work). We also fabricated some special accent doors and added custom corbels at the cooktop.

Before: Notice that the beadboard detail doesn’t hardly show up on the original finish. The blue tape was for scaling the new corbels.
-
Before: The new full-height doors will cover the previous clutter. Notice on the island is my template of the arch from the hood cabinet. This will make sure that our new doors match up to the existing arched opening.

The new arched doors, corbels and glazed finish really help make this remodel really special.

We cut the island legs on our CNC router. It’s an interesting process to watch. The router zips back and forth with a small round-nose bit. It looks kind of like a printer-head running back and forth. Notice that the ends of the tenons are faceted. This is a subtle detail that really adds. The full-extension dovetail drawers make the storage a pleasure to use.

During the process I miss measured 2 doors (yes, we do make mistakes sometimes). We didn’t catch the mistake until all of the finish work was complete. I gave those doors to them thinking they might be able to use them somewhere. He actually used those doors on the ceiling to recenter their light fixture over the new island. He did the same in their dining room too! This kind of creative ingenuity just makes me smile!

Island back – Notice the mini-corbels that line up with the panel details. Behind the arched bottom end panels and back is a recessed toe that makes cleaning so much easier. You can also see the 2nd mis-made door on the ceiling in the dining area.

The new island, glazing, accent doors, corbels, granite tops, splash and mistake doors all came together to function better with a new updated look that they will enjoy for many years to come! It was a pleasure to get to work with the Granholds once again!
